Moncton got its name from Lieutenant Colonel Robert Monkton. The Acadians were the first to settle in Moncton in the 1670s, they came because of the soil and land how ever they turned it into marshlands and built a community, since Moncton had great land it was meant for farming, but that was not how they saw it back then. The Acadians named their community Le Coude (The Bend) because of the curve in the Peiticodiac River. In 1755 the Acadians were deported and that left the land empty for 10 years until 1766 when a group of families from Pennsylvania came and settled there, this is when Moncton got its name.
